An introduction to Veneers
or a single tooth Veneer

Veneer

A dental veneer provides a very natural look, they are often used for cosmetic reasons. Typically used as part of a smile makeover treatment package perhaps alongside other treatment solutions such as an implant, bridge, crown & teeth whitening under the category of ‘cosmetic dentistry‘.+44 1785 251287

What are the benefits of a veneer or veneers?

There are two typical types, porcelain dental veneers and composite Veneers can be used for cosmetic purposes such as covering up minor tooth damage or imperfections. The colour of the veneers can be selected by your dentist to match your existing teeth or to make them appear whiter. It usually takes at least two visits for a veneer depending on your oral health. During the first appointment we will be assessing your overall oral health, getting prepared for the treatment, examining fitment, taking measurements and scans and matching the tooth shade. The second appointment will be to fit it.

Dental veneers mimic the look and feel of real teeth so they help give you a bright, natural looking smile. Veneers are also stain-resistant and if cared for properly, they can last for many years before needing replacement. They can cover up stained, chipped, cracked or misaligned teeth or even replace damaged enamel.

In comparison to dental crowns, which require removing most of an individual’s natural tooth structure, dental veneers remove just enough enamel so they blend seamlessly into the surrounding teeth. Dental Veneers also offer similar strength and very natural looking results.

If you are looking for a cosmetic dentist, our team of dentists and dental nurses have a wealth of experience in cosmetic dentistry and offer a warm, friendly, caring environment. We genuinely care about our patients and endeavour to offer the best dentistry and oral care as is possible. Your smile matters to us!

Porcelain Dental Veneers vs Composite Veneers?

Porcelain dental veneers are typically thin shells of porcelain surface which is adhered to the dental outer-surface of the tooth itself and thus improve your smile. Whereas dental ‘Composite Veneers’ are typically a resin-based composite material alternative which are applied to the outer service of your tooth.  Both treatment options will be made to match your teeth colour (or whiter if you prefer) and improve your smile. Your dentist will advise on the best treatment route to take and suggest other dental services to compliment such as tooth whitening.

How are porcelain veneers fitted to my teeth? (Dental Veneer Fitting Procedure)?

Your dentist will perform an initial dental examination to determine if porcelain veneers are right for you. After this has been decided, your tooth can be prepped for the veneers. The dental veneer procedure involves removing a thin layer from the surface of your teeth so that the veneers can be applied smoothly, without altering their shape.

Once your dentist has taken dental impressions of your teeth, they'll create a custom-made veneer for them. A temporary cover may be placed over your exposed tooth while the new veneer is being prepared.

Once created in your chosen colour, the dental veneers will be applied to your teeth and adjusted as needed, before they'll be permanently fixed into position. To keep your new veneers looking great, you’ll want to take good care of them just like any other tooth.

Veneers can last for years if properly taken care of, but they can be replaced should any damage occur helping you to look after your smile.

How do I care for my dental veneers?

Your gums or teeth might feel slightly sore after your dentist performs the procedure but this is normal and it should settle down a few days after the treatment. Veneers are easy to look after - they are the same as your other teeth and require the same care. Your dentist will typically advise normal brushing, flossing of your teeth, regular dentist visits and hygiene appointments will help look after your new veneers.

The dentist may also advise against biting your nails or hard objects, opening things with your teeth, chewing very hard food & thus to helping to or using a mouth guard (i.e in sports) as this often damages your smile and teeth. It is also best to avoid staining food and drink such as coffee, tea, and red wine to ensure all of your teeth (existing and veneers) are clear of stains & thus your smile stays in tip top condition.

A patient can still develop cavities even though they have veneers, so it is important to practice good oral hygiene , including brushing the teeth twice per day and flossing or interdental cleaning device on a daily basis to ensure you maintain your smile and overall oral hygiene.

How long do Veneers last?

A veneer lasts anywhere from seven to fifteen years if looked after properly. Once this time has passed, the veneers will require replacement if advised by your dentist.

Veneer longevity varies depending on the material used for the veneer and whether the patient takes good care of their teeth. You can talk to your dentist about time frames for replacement veneers.

What happens after a veneer is fitted to my tooth?

Minor adjustments to your veneer tooth or teeth can be made to the new dental veneer after it is fitted but it is best to wait a short time whilst to get used to them before any changes are made by your dentist.

They will also check if you are happy with the look and feel of your veneer & that you have achieved the smile you are looking for: Smiles to match your personality.

What are the downsides of having veneers?

Dental Veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry that provide a long-term solution to improve the cosmetic look of imperfect teeth. Once you've had veneers fitted to your teeth, it's an irreversible procedure due to the fact that your dentist will need to remove the outer layer of enamel of your teeth as well as shape your teeth in order to apply the veneer. You will always need to have veneers on those teeth, so after a long period of time, they may need replacing & your teeth may need reshaping.

Your new dental veneers may take some time getting used too & your mouth may feel a little different. In some cases patients can also experience some sensitivity after the procedure.

The cost of Veneers also needs to be taken into consideration. Dental Veneers come at different prices and offer varying degrees of longevity. Veneers made from porcelain tend to be stronger than their acrylic counterparts, but they cost significantly more. Veneer composites made from resin are less expensive than porcelain veneers, but they don't last quite as long and tend to be more fragile.

Dental Veneers are a permanent way to fix minor cosmetic issues like discoloration, chips, cracks, etc. If someone wants to consider having cosmetic dental work done, they should talk to a dentist first.
